Play the PC versions of 2 & 3 and play 1 from the PSN store, although the PSN Store version has minor audio glitches with speech and towards the end of the game. Nothing big though. Personally I strongly prefer PS2 if you can afford that and the games, if not as the other commenter said the HD Collection is fairly cheap, just know that it's not as amazing of an experience. Also it only includes 2 and 3 so you'll miss out on 1 and 3 is far better if you've played 1. Not necessary I guess but definitely richer in context. Some of the games are on Steam as well if you have a PC, but I don't know which ones or what the prices are. I've also heard those versions are a little buggy but I don't know firsthand how much of that is accurate and how much is whiny purists like myself. Well, if its your very first time entering the Silent Hill world you could get the Silent hill 1 on the PSN store Digital for 9 USD (If I'm not mistaken). Then you could hunt for a copy of the HD remaster of Silent Hill 2/3 (they come in a bundle) Many people are gonna say it's horrible and buggy blah.

But that's because they played the shit out of the PS2 games, and they find minor details such as the Fog and some sound effects to be out of sync with the original game. I recommend you to play that one why? It's cheaper than getting a PS2, and the SH 2/3/4 games for PS2 because it's very expensive. Now, after you finish 2 and 3 you can either go hunting for 4 for PC or an emulator of PS2.

You could stop there, since Homecoming and Downpour aren't the best entries in the series, but if you want to, you can go and get those two. You can find them easily for PS3. Hang around the Silent Hill WiKi since you can find a huge amount of lore that is scattered throughout the games and sometimes is hard to find it all (IF you are not a completionist).

That said, I welcome you to Silent Hill, may you enjoy your stay in this fun and peaceful town. OP, I highly recommend that you do not begin with the HD collection. People are entitled to their opinion, OF course, but many things were changed. The issue is that the developers of the HD collection were actually using an incomplete version of the original games code.

That lead to many bugs, such as texture issues, fog issues, and many sound effects being messed up. Also, there was a a subjective style change in the complete redo of voice actors. There's quite a few examples in which the new recordings skim over the originals intent, leaving the lines lost or hard to decipher without a proper delivery.

That opinion is based on getting the best atmosphere as possible (as I feel these game are best experienced this way). You will need to find the BIOS for the emulators, as direct links are frowned upon to those.:P Quick hints for emulators Resolution Run pcsx2, go to Config->Video(GS)->Plugin and put your desired resolution. If your pcsx2 is 1.2.1 or newer, it should already have the required widescreen fixes, by 'Enable Cheats' and 'Enable Widescreen Patches' for those to take effect.
